Ambivalence – Yoshitoshi Kanemaki

Yoshitoshi Kanemaki è uno scultore giapponese con sede a Chiba, la sua tecnica è concretizzata nel legno.

Le sue sculture in scala naturale miscelano un bizzarro senso dell’umorismo ad elementi morbosi e ridondanti. Con una continua allusione alla morte e all’aldilà, le figure deformi i cui volti esplosi rappresentano l’espansione del tempo, la complessità del pensiero.

Agitato attorno ai bordi, il suo lavoro non tenta di nascondere le prove del processo artigiano. Kanemaki mette la sua maestria in prima linea, mostrandoci le imperfezioni delle superfici scolpite a mano, ammorbidite da un tratto spensierato e coerente.

E proprio perchè imperfette, risultano come una deformazione fortemente ironica della figura umana e del suo subconscio.

Il risultato sono delle sculture accattivanti e sorprendenti, ricche di dettagli, dalle forme riconoscibili, con un chiaro riferimento alla pop art e citazioni fumettistiche. Prospettive e personalità multiple, giochi di sguardi ed un sapiente utilizzo di colore ed ombra.

La collezione “Memento Mori”, una serie di figure, prevalentemente maschili, fuse con degli scheletri archetipici, non mostra una morte dolorosa, non invita ad averne timore, la abbraccia come parte di una vita piena di stranezze ed imperfezioni.

Attualmente i lavori di Kanemaki si trovano a Tokyo.
