Road Signs – La realtà kitsch e artificiale di Eric Tabuchi

Eric Tabuchi è un fotografo di Parigi nato nel 1959. Danese di madre e giapponese di padre, in lui risiede un mix di culture diverse.

Dopo aver studiato sociologia, si dedica alla fotografia e, in circa 15 anni di attività, ha prodotto un’impressionante mole di lavoro.
I suoi scatti nascono per strada e in luoghi perlopiù deserti. Decide di concentrare la sua ricerca di soggetti su una superficie di circa 250km intorno Parigi.

“Prendo le immagini di luoghi deserti perché enfatizzano la forma. Lontano dal trambusto, ogni sito, ogni soggetto si trasforma in una sorta di personaggio, come se fosse stato artificialmente messo lì, quasi un logo. Naturalmente la sensazione di ordine e quiete che deriva da questa scelta non è affatto obiettiva, nonostante le apparenze. Ma in qualche modo mi piace l’idea di utilizzare ciò che è lì per comporre una tipologia quasi grafica che permette di riorganizzare le cose, un po’ alla Sim City – un mondo idealizzato, quasi onirico.”

Autostrade, zone di campagna o suburbane sono i luoghi preferiti del suo vagare. Con grande dedizione e diligenza fotografa una vasta sfera di soggetti che poi raggruppa nei suoi lavori, rigorosamente raccolti in serie. Unico comune denominatore tra queste è l’assenza dell’essere umano.

I temi sono tantissimi: aree di accesso limitato, camper e ristoranti americani in Francia, bizzarri ristoranti cinesi, segnali e scritte commerciali, skatepark, ha addirittura “creato” un alfabeto prendendo le lettere dal retro dei camion. Ha ripreso inoltre temi passati come “Twentysix Gasoline Stations”, progetto di Ed Ruscha già trattato nel 1963.

Particolare attenzione va alla serie Road Signs, in cui raccoglie oggetti dal gusto kitsch e stranezze in cui si è imbattuto. Con il suo modo di fotografare nitido e pulito ci permette di guardare una realtà artificiale presentata in modo crudo e sincero.

“Non ho particolare simpatia per il gusto kitsch e, inoltre, ho sempre trovato un senso di condiscendenza verso coloro che ammirano l’ingenuità del sottoprodotto della cultura pop.”
