L’architettura è una nuvola – Sou Fujimoto

 L’opera si compone di una serie di cubi in alluminio di due diverse dimensioni, quasi accatastati su una base che ricalca l’andamento irregolare della struttura e incrementa l’aspetto sfumato dell’intervento. Collegati attraverso i vertici da una struttura metallica passante, gli elementi sembrano a tratti fluttuare sospesi, intervallati da arbusti e piante che colonizzano gli spazi interstiziali.

Suggestione per una casa nomade ed effettivamente smontabile e provvisoria, questo piccolo prototipo si sviluppa a partire da un nucleo ‘abitativo’ centrale, delimitato in modo incerto da una parete frastagliata interrotta da due accessi, che diventa copertura e arredo al tempo stesso, andando a configurare nuove potenzialità di sviluppo per l’abitare. È la ‘cave’, la caverna teorizzata nel suo Primitive Future come archetipo di spazio opposto al nido, non adattata sull’uomo ma a cui l’uomo si adatta, in cui gli spazi non sono costruiti specificatamente per delle funzioni ma, appunto per questo, lasciano aperti spiragli e possibilità inaspettate, in un ambiente fluido e quasi ludico.

Come in altre sue opere, l’esperienza diretta dello spazio è una componente fondamentale: si può dire che architetture come questa o come il Serpentine Gallery Pavillion e il Krumbach Bus Stop appaiano diverse da ogni punto di vista, in ogni momento e per ogni spettatore, e la rappresentazione fotografica difetta nel trasmettere la molteplicità di questi spazi complessi, e quindi prepotentemente contemporanei. Abituati agli edifici-oggetto che pongono le basi per la loro riconoscibilità su forme innovative ma identificabili e caratteristiche di un autore, Fujimoto sembra parlare un altro linguaggio, misterioso e proiettato nel futuro.

In Many Small Cubes tornano, rielaborati, molti temi caratteristici della sua ricerca: il rapporto sfumato tra interno ed esterno, la natura, il rapporto tra ordine e disordine e quello tra le singole parti che generano lo spazio da un infittirsi improvviso della maglia spaziale. Lo spazio si genera dalle relazioni e dai sensi di distanze, sembra coagularsi e convergere in una forma determinata ma aperta, che colonizza lo spazio con delicatezza, momento di concretezza effimera sospeso in bilico sulla superficie del terreno.

 The installation Many Small Cubes is the first project in Paris by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, realized during FIAC, international contemporary art fair which involves gallerists and creative proposals, in the Tuileries Garden inside the ‘small nomad house’ project by Galerie Philippe Gravier. The building is made by a series of aluminium boxes of different dimensions, almost stacked on a base which recalls the irregular contour of the structure and increases the pale aspect of the project. The different elements, linked through the vertices by a steel structure, sometimes seem to fluctuate suspended, spaced by shrubs and small bushes which colonize the spaces in between. Suggestion for a nomad house and actually flexible and allowing the possibility of being dismantled, this small housing prototype grows from a central nucleus, delimited in a fuzzy way by a fragmented external partition with two entrances, which becomes even roofing and furniture at the same time, realizing new potentiality for housing. It is the ‘cave’ theorised in the architect’s Primitive Future as an archetype space opposed to the nest, not specifically fitting the human being but to which he can adapt, in which spaces are not explicitly designed for a specific activity but able to leave, in this way, unexpected cracks and possibilities for different functions, in a fluid and playful environment.

As in other Fujimoto’s projects before, the personal experience of space is an essential element: architectures like this one or like the Serpentine Gallery Pavillion and Krumbach Bus Stop look different from every point of view, in every moment and for each user, and photographic representation fails in transmitting the multiplicity of these complex spaces, for this reason highly contemporary. Used to the object-building which aim to be recognized by innovative, but recognizable and proper of a certain author, shapes, Fujimoto seems to speak another language, mysterious and pointed towards the future.

In Many Small Cubes we can find, reworked, many characteristic themes proper of his research: the soft relation between inside and outside, nature, the relation between order and disorder and the one between the different parts which shape space as a sudden increase of density inside the spatial tangle. Space is given by connections and senses of distance, seems to coagulate and converge in a determined but open form, which colonizes space gently, like a  moment of evanescent concreteness suspended precariously on the surface of the ground.
