Irriverenti, sarcastici ed innovativi. Sono i FREAKS Freearchitects, un gruppo di architetti parigini: Guillaume Aubry, Cyril Gauthier e Yves Pasquet.
“Less is more, more is more, less is not enough” è la frase che si trova nella biografia del loro sito e rappresenta il loro modo di vedere l’architettura e di affrontarla portandoli a distaccarsi dalla tipica autoreferenzialità dell’ambiente.
L’agire fuori dagli schemi emerge sia dai loro progetti e dalle rispettive presentazioni che dal sito, una rappresentazione unita ad un po’ di sano humor del loro modo di fare e affrontare l’architettura e l’arte. Numerose sono le installazioni e gli interventi che criticamente parlano dell’argomento traslando l’attenzione sull’oggetto stesso e non su chi lo ha realizzato. Un esempio su tutti è Sur Mesure / Making of, del 2011, un’installazione voluta dal Consiglio Nazionale degli Architetti, nata col nome ” Le Droit à l’Architecture “.
Per alcuni mesi, sulla facciata dell’edificio del Partito Comunista francese progettato da Oscar Niemeyer, sono rimasti applicati degli adesivi colorati con indicate le quote dello stesso. Questa semplice operazione concepita per dare nuovamente voce ad una vecchia signora ormai dimenticata e messa in disparte nasce dalla voglia del gruppo di ridare la giusta importanza ad un’ Architettura che è parte integrante di uno scenario urbano dato per scontato e non vissuto in maniera conscia da chi lo frequenta quotidianamente.
La logica del minimo intervento e della massima attenzione al dettaglio sembra pervadere ogni loro progetto, quasi da renderlo un marchio di fabbrica FREAKS. Questa sensibilità che li caratterizza è visibile in molti dei loro interventi, più o meno recenti, come il Tribal act tattoo+piercing, Heliocosm cosmetics shop del 2011, la Napoleon flat del 2012 o l’ancora più recente Geneva flat del 2014.
In tutti questi progetti il gruppo si rapporta ad un contesto esistente ponendo grande attenzione ai dettagli e alla spazialità interna, adeguando il nuovo all’esistente.
L’esempio eclatante è l’appartamento di 35 mq di Ginevra in cui, con grande semplicità, sono riusciti ad organizzare lo spazio dividendo il monolocale in due fasce: quella giorno e quella notte.
La parte sinistra è interamente dedicata alla zona living, mentre a destra sono articolati camera da letto, cucina e bagno. Astuta è in alcuni casi la scelta di tramezzi totalmente permeabili in vetro che permettessero alla luce di filtrare in tutto l’ambiente. Oculata è la scelta del mobilio che diventa parte integrante di articolazione dello spazio nel tentativo di sfruttarne il più possibile le potenzialità.
Molto importanti sono gli oggetti di interior design direttamente progettati dagli architetti che servono a modellare e modulare lo spazio in base alle esigenze dei committenti senza mai tradire la loro essenzialità di intenti.
La peculiarità alla base di ogni loro lavoro resta la presentazione caratterizzata dalla loro presenza il più delle volte camuffata con travestimenti, come nelle foto di David Foessel in cui sorseggiano del finto the seduti su altrettante finte sedie, mentre indossando il cappello dell’Imperatore francese.
La visione ironica e autocritica dell’architettura e della figura stessa dell’architetto li distacca dal panorama odierno rendendoli una voce fuori dal coro, suscitando un’osservazione spontanea in chi si rapporta ai loro progetti che solo una loro affermazione può descrivere: “hey, this is freaks!”

They won the prize AJAP 2009-2010 by the Ministry of Culture and Communication French and in 2012, along with the study BIG, the competition for the construction of a cultural center in Bordeaux, which they called Meca (Maison de l’Economie Créative et de la Culture en Aquitaine) and that will be build in the future.

The act outside the box emerges from their projects and the presentation that they do the same.
Besides, the site, their business card, is the representation combined with a little ‘healthy humor of the way they do and deal with the architecture and art. Numerous installations and interventions that speak critically of the argument, shifting the attention on the object itself and not on who carried it out. An example is Sur Mesure / Making of, dated 2011, commissioned by the National Council of Architects, was born with the name “Le Droit à l’Architecture”.
For a few months on the facade of the building of the French communist party designed by Oscar Niemeyer were applied with colored stickers show the coordinates of the same. This simple operation, designed to give voice back to an old lady now forgotten and put aside, born from the desire of the group to give due importance to an ‘architecture that is part of an urban scenario for granted and do not live in a conscious of who attends daily.

In all these projects the Freaks relate to an existing context, paying great attention to detail and internal space of adapting the new existent.
This is the case of the apartment of 35 square meters of Geneva where, with great simplicity, they managed to organize the space dividing the studio in two bands: one day and that night.
The left part is dedicated to the living area, while to the right is a bedroom, kitchen and bathroom. Smart is, in some cases, the choice of partitions totally permeable glass that would allow light to filter throughout the environment, avoiding to incur in restricted environments. Furthermore oculata is the choice of furniture which becomes an integral part of articulation of the space in an attempt to exploit as much as possible the potential.
Very important are the objects of interior design directly designed by the architects that serve to shape and modulate the space according to the needs of the clients, never betray their essentiality of intent.
The peculiarity at the base of each of their project is the presentation: introducing their figures, alien to the context, peering and live with great irony environments, the Freaks themselves become protagonists of the shots of the presentation.
Just as was the case for the shots of the photographer David Foessel in the house of the Napoleonic era in which the fake sipping sitting on the many fake chairs while wearing hat French Emperor.
The ironic and self-criticism of architecture and the architect of the figure itself, detaches them from the scene today, making them almost a lone voice, eliciting spontaneous remark in who is related to their projects that only a statement can describe them: “hey, this is freaks!”
