Un piccolo spazio intimo – Mini Galerie

Founded in 2011, Mini Galerie is a young and upcoming gallery, based –at the beginning- in a small flat in the city centre of Amsterdam. Several times a year the flat was transformed into a temporary exhibition space where were presented the work of clever young artists.

Even though it started out with one temporary exhibition, after the moving out of the roommate, Mini Galerie got a lot of positive feedback and so Julia van der Meer, founder, decided to make it real. The first idea was always clear: to be more accessible for a bigger and younger audience. Especially for people that don’t have a lot of money to spend, but a lot of curiosity: in the gallery there are always things to buy for a small amount of money, such as screenprints, postcards, zines and books. According to van der Meer, a gallery should not be a scary place, where people don’t dare to step in, but it should be a meeting place and a platform for artists and artlovers.

Between May and June 2014 there was Apertura, a group show that features works by Italian artists like Moneyless, 108, CT, Tellas, Ciredz and Martina Merlin. An event that seems to be a declaration of intent: the opening of a new space, no more private like a flat, but still personal, where the aims of the founder are reflected (in particular, to offer a diversified and deep insight of what are the different approaches to visual and stylistic art).

«For me Amsterdam is perfect base for the Mini Galerie. Even though it is a fairly small city, almost like a village, it has everything a big city has to offer. It is a creative hub, quite international, equipped with a lively cultural scene, and most of all, you can easily cycle everywhere shortly. In the future I definitely see myself working with other galleries from around the world, but my home will surely be in Amsterdam.»
