Il lavoro dell’artista giapponese erompe dalle lacerazioni aperte nella nostra realtà dagli strumenti che pretendono di renderla solida e coesa. Virtualizzazione, automazione, robotizzazione, digitalizzazione attraversano diametralmente il mondo e lo perforano. A causa dell’altissimo livello pressione interna creato dalla moltiplicazione dei sistemi di trasformazione e gestione della realtà, la materia di cui questa è composta si riversa come un fluido dai fori sulla fragile pellicola che tiene unito il nostro sistema del reale. Questi fluidi dispersi sono la materia con cui l’artista giapponese crea le sue opere. Ryoji Ikeda solidifica in cristalli taglienti e acuminati il flusso incontrollato di codici cifrati, impulsi sonori e sequenze luminose.
La cristallizzazione è il processo con cui prende forma il mondo spigoloso di Ryoji Ikeda. La materia che eccede dal nostro mondo e sfugge al controllo dei nostri sistemi di dominio, viene intercettata e organizzata secondo austere strutture geometriche, il cui rigore è esasperato dal contrasto manicheo del bianco e nero.
Le opere di Ryoji Ikeda provocano impressioni contrastanti. Nonostante il loro carattere ostico e alienante, evocano qualcosa di estremamente familiare, rendendo tutto ancora più inquietante. Nelle violente raffiche di luce e di suoni artificiali di Test pattern, nelle infinite serie numeriche di V≠L, nei suoni acuti e penetranti di Datamatics, riverbera l’essenza stessa del mondo degli uomini. Elementi costantemente presenti nella nostra quotidianità, perdono qui il loro carattere funzionale e diventano meri oggetti estetici.
Ciò che solitamente innerva i nostri sistemi di comunicazione e di informazione, a cui il nostro sistema percettivo è ormai completamente assuefatto, viene riproposto in maniera ristrutturata e amplificata, tanto da scuotere e risvegliare la nostra ricettività estetica dal profondo torpore in cui riversa ormai da tempo.
The works by Ryoji Ikeda are an autonomous and alternative reality, organised according to complex and articulate dynamics.
His works erupt from the lacerations of our reality, which are created by the instruments that allude to make it solid and cohesive. Virtualisation, automation and computerisation cross this world and perforate it. Due to the high internal pressure created by the multiplication of these managing instruments, the matter spills out from the holes on the film that keep our system of reality unified. These sprinkled fluids are the matter used by the Japanese artist to create his works. Ryoji Ikeda solidifies the runaway flow of codes, auditory pulses, and visual sequences into barbed and shaped crystals.
The angular world of Ikeda takes form according to the process of crystallisation. This matter, which exceeds our world and runs away from our dominating systems, is intercepted and organised according to austere geometrical structures. Their rigour is intensified by the manichean contrast of black and white.
Ikeda’s works cause contrasting sensations. Despite their tough and alienating character, they evocate something extremely familiar, thus becoming more disquieting. The essence of man’s world reverberates in the violent and rapid sequence of light and artificial sounds of Test pattern, in the infinite numerical series of V≠L, and in the acute and penetrating sounds of Datamatics. These elements are present every day, but here they lose their functional aspect and became mere aesthetical objects.
Ikeda deconstructs and amplifies what innervates the communication and information media to which our perception is completely accustomed, to shake and awake our aesthetical receptiveness from its torpidity, in which it has laid for a long time.
