Asymptote – Evelyn Bencicova e Adam Csoka Keller

The cold and livid colours, the grotesque homologation imposed on the men, the rigorously geometrical structure of the images, crossed by dizzying oblique lines, are the elements that characterised Asymptote: the visual project created by the photographer Evelyn Bencicova and the video maker Adam Csoka Keller.

The spectral worlds represented b the two Slovak   artists are pervaded by a grace state, disquieting and uncomfortable, more similar to a premortem condition of a patient in an operating theatre, than to a mystical ecstasy.

In their works, the tension that crosses the images is asymptotic, tending incessantly to the point of zero and infinity, chasing the representation of what cannot be represented. The divergent dynamics of the two opposite trends generate a precarious balance, destined to collapse and dissolve the image, Evelyn Bencicova and Adam Csoka Keller capture the moment that precedes its complete vanishing.

Colours turn to white; shapes almost become mere geometrical abstractions; men whose individuality is b now just a residual trace: everything lets you presage the imminent disappearance of the image.

The locations where the inexorable dissolution takes place seem ready to host the annihilating process: the sites of a swimming pool sterilised b chlorine, the spaces of an anonymous public building, the ordered halls and classroom of a school.

The unnatural composed movements of the characters further reduces their human aspect. The individuals are dominated by an extraneous and immeasurable force, for which they are not only the victims, but the accomplices as well, the means by which this invisible force acts and appears. You can directly perceive its presence, albeit vaguely, only through the reverberating and obscure sounds by Arielle Esther.

Asymptote has a tragic and sacrificial character. Like in every tragedy, destiny realises its mythic decree through its victims.
