Simon Freund – Design e consumismo al tempo del Black Friday

Shopping Bags è un’opera del giovane artista concettuale Simon Freund. Il tedesco ha ideato una serie di sei sedie, ognuna delle quali è costituita da uno scheletro di colore nero e da shopping bags appartenenti a diversi marchi come Supreme, Aldi, COS, Primark e Acne Studios.

Freund ironizza sulla cultura consumistica dei giorni nostri e sulla spinta all’acquisto di oggetti superflui, di cui non abbiamo bisogno. In tempo per il Black Friday, si scaglia contro i modi di commercializzare e proporre al pubblico i prodotti da parte delle grandi catene di vendita. Freund disapprova chi tenti di svendere i propri articoli. Se si ritiene corretto un certo prezzo per un prodotto, scendere sotto quella soglia svaluta il prodotto stesso. Sulla guerra dei prezzi dice:

L’intero settore sta avendo una forte mancanza in fatto di onestà e io non riesco a rispettare le aziende che stanno prendendo parte a questi eventi

Freund esplora dunque il rapporto tra design e consumismo senza abbandonare le sue radici: la produzione delle sue opere avviene in Germania, in collaborazione con artigiani, designer ed artisti locali.

Brands should ask themselves why they are doing what they are doing. If the first answer is money I think there is not much you can do to make a brand more socially or economically aware, but brands have shown that there are others answers to this questions and this is where it should start. […] I think every company should consider what they are doing and why they are doing it.
