Come sarebbero i trasporti oggi se l’Impero Romano esistesse ancora?

Ha provato ad immaginarlo uno studente dell’Università di Chicago. Sasha Trubetskoy ha disegnato una rete di trasporti immaginaria che copre più di 80mila Km e collega un totale di 113 province dalla moderna Inghilterra al Nord Africa.

Ma quanto ci sarebbe voluto per percorrere l’intera rete?
Sasha spiega che molto sarebbe ovviamente dipeso dal mezzo di trasporto scelto, ma anche dalla stagione – in estate ci sarebbero voluti circa due mesi per percorrere a piedi la distanza tra Roma e Bisanzio, mentre con un cavallo “solo” un mese, “ma nessun Romano sano di mente avrebbe usato solo le strade avendo a disposizione il mare, infatti navigare era molto più economico e veloce e la distanza tra Roma e Bisanzio sarebbe stata coperta in appena 25 giorni”.

Chiaramente, per una questione di semplificazione molte città e strade sono state escluse:

The biggest creative element was choosing which roads and cities to include, and which to exclude. There is no way I could include every Roman road, these are only the main ones. I tried to include cities with larger populations, or cities that were provincial capitals around the 2nd century.
