What Remains of a City is a series of eleven photographs taken by Sarah Bejerano during long walks in New York City.

Sarah Bejerano began photographing New York from a different perspective, seeking to capture the distance that had gradually emerged between herself and the city.

My photographic work can fit within the parameters that define documentary photography since I shoot with the intention of visually archiving a specific theme or element of reality.
However, this is accompanied by a need to understand it, more for what it hides than for what it shows.

Rather than portraying the city itself, the photographs evoke the memory of a place that changes along with us. Whenever we leave a city behind, we carry a part of it within us and, in a sense, it remains suspended in time.

The common thread of my photographic work is to narrate the history of a specific territory and of its inhabitants through the spaces created.

Bridges, rivers, streets and houses may still stand in the same places, yet nothing is exactly as we remember it: the city has changed, and so has the person returning to it.

This series stems from the idea that whenever we leave our home country, we carry two versions of it with us: the one we experienced and the one preserved in our memory.

The message conveyed by the photographs transcends both the series and the city of New York, exploring the universal bond we share with the places that continue to live within us, even after we no longer call them home.
