Born in Saitama in 1969, Miho Ichise is a contemporary painter who captures the essence of life’s simplest details, transforming into art what often escapes the eye. A brief work experience in Tokyo at a French bank proved to be an epiphanic moment for Ichise, giving her the opportunity to understand what she truly wanted to pursue in life: in that environment, she realized she carried within herself a strong creative impulse that she needed to express.

From 1993 to 1996, she lived in France, where she attended various painting courses in artists’ studios and art schools, moving between three major cities: Toulouse, Angers, and Paris. She later relocated to England and, in 2002, graduated in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Since 2012, she has devoted herself fully to painting and now lives in Fukuoka.

Scenes of everyday life are at the heart of her artistic exploration. Ichise photographs whatever captures her attention, then makes a quick sketch on canvas of the detail that struck her before deciding how to develop the composition. Photography, being static, allows her to focus on the elements most meaningful to her, giving her the time to process the image and the atmosphere she intends to create, often altering colors and adding new elements.
What may seem fleeting or insignificant to us becomes the central subject of Ichise’s work: she seeks to highlight what is usually overlooked or taken for granted in daily life. A broken plate, a shadow on the wall, a black cat, children splashing in puddles—these become symbols of the artist’s intention:
I would like my work to be an open door to anybody where they can enter and enjoy a connection to their childhood.

Her paintings, suspended in time, merge figurative and abstract elements that captivate the viewer, inviting them to imagine a world extending beyond the canvas and offering a chance to reconnect with both their inner child and the poetry of everyday life.
The clarity and precision of Alex Katz’s works, the woodblock prints of Hasui Kawase depicting Japanese landscapes, the vibrant linework of Pierre Bonnard, and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow in Georges de La Tour’s subjects are important points of reference for Ichise. Quick, vibrant brushstrokes create the backdrop for figures and life scenes with more defined contours, as light filters through tree branches, diffuses softly through curtains, illuminates clouds at sunset, or glimmers across a river’s surface.

The children who appear in some of the paintings are the artist’s daughters and their friends, captured in moments of serene domesticity, guiding the viewer to explore simple yet meaningful situations. Scenes of joy and playfulness alternate with more intimate and contemplative moments, rich in details that seem to come alive under the observer’s gaze. Among these, the textures of fabrics stand out with polka dots and floral patterns rendered almost tangible. For Ichise, such details are essential in creating the right atmosphere and conveying emotion.

Between 2014 and 2024, Miho Ichise held five solo exhibitions in Switzerland, Australia, Osaka, and Brussels. Between 2021 and 2025, her works were also included in nineteen group exhibitions worldwide.
