A tireless and vibrant creativity, many techniques used but always aimed at an ingenious relationship between technique and invention; a myriad of works that make browsing her website a true pleasure. A journey dedicated to unrestrained imagination, closely tied to the refinement of lines, shapes, and colors.
We are talking about Tanya Coates, artist, illustrator, and motion designer, who lives and works in Los Angeles and transforms the famous fil rouge into her own personal Prussian blue thread: a thin yet strong filament that indissolubly binds all of her works together.
In her 3D moving images – a branch of computer graphics that processes three-dimensional models through algorithms that produce photographic realism in the final image – that luminous blue dominates. A sinuous hand, a torso and a veiled face, appear incandescent in their blinding blue.
Other images by Tanya, even those with calming and delicate pastel colors, bring us back to a surreal dimension: a tangle of legs wrapped in soft pink that recalls the childish colors of a Barbie doll. Here she seems to be in a swirling search for her body, forgotten somewhere or perhaps flown away to other worlds. The spring toy evokes the famous Tiramolla, created in 1952 from an idea by Roberto Renzi, inspired by the invention of silicone: a malleable, stretchable material capable of taking on any shape.
Her 2D images, imagination knows no limits. Graphic design, comics, sketches, caricatures, illustrations, drawings, portraits, black-and-white and color watercolors, cyanotypes…
In the caricatures, both the line and the inventiveness, recall the famous caricatures of George Grosz (Berlin, 1893–1950), renowned for his biting political satire and social criticism.
In the objects, that favored blue returns: delicate images of butterflies, twigs, horses enclosed in a milky frame that seems made of soft crumb, inviting to the touch and perhaps destined to melt like snow at the first sun.
Tanya Coates has a background in fine arts and works with various techniques to bring her ideas to life creatively.
