Not everyone is comfortable with words; some people can fully express themselves through music, others through images. For this reason, we have decided to start this new type of format in which we give 5 prompts to some of the illustrators we like the most and ask them to respond through sketches. Not something complex and elaborate, but just rough sketches on paper, like when as children we give shape to our imagination. This is Chen Wu.
Chen Wu is a London-based conceptual illustrator and animation director originally from Taiwan.
His practice begins with a deceptively simple question: what happens when you look at an ordinary thing long enough that it stops being ordinary?
Through illustration and moving image, he transforms everyday objects into surreal visual metaphors, finding the strange inside the familiar, and the familiar inside the strange.
This philosophy has found its most devoted subject in the egg. In Chen’s hands, a fried egg is never just breakfast: it is a character, a cosmic event, and an entirely legitimate reason to avoid daily work trivia.
When not in active conversation with eggs, his illustrations have appeared in Harvard Business Review, Forbes, Adobe, Wacom, and Business Insider. His animated short films have screened at the London Short Film Festival, PÖFF Black Nights, and Berlin INTERFILM Festival. His works also has been recognised by the World Illustration Awards, Communication Arts, 3×3 and the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.
